Oct. 29th, 2004 @ 02:01 pm Brittany's debriefing
Jack Bristow gestured for her to have a seat as he took the empty seat across the table. Dixon sat in the middle seat and Kendall to his right [same setup as Jack's debriefing]

Brittany folded her hands in her lap and waited patiently, her eye contact almost unnerving to those who weren't used to it. She knew, right now, David McNorris was making calls and veiled threats, probably. And Richard Durant was doing - whatever Durant did. She didn't know.

Jack spoke. "Tell us what happened, in detail, in your own words."

She nodded. Narratives she was used to. He seemed to prefer them; he'd asked her for one on Coventry. "Yes, sir. Which time frame are we discussing?"

"Start from the point where you left to save your agent."

Another almost imperceptible nod. "The target was requesting myself, Agent Bauer and Dr. Weiss in exchange for Agent Holden. We consented to the exchange and followed the directions given us by the target, which landed us in Germany. Once there, I was secured and unconscious for a twelve-hour period, approximately.

"When I came to, I was in a holding room with Agent Holden, who had been previously brutalized. I was briefly interrogated by the target, but when I refused to surrender information and was unresponsive to his threats of violence, he lost interest in me and left the room. This gave me ample time and space to liberate myself from my restraints. Upon doing so, I also liberated Agent Holden and we left the room in order to liberate Agent Bauer and Dr. Weiss.

"Once we discovered where they were being held, we rushed the room. A melee ensued between us and the two guards present, one of which Agent Holden immobilized, the other of which fled the scene. Agent Holden then liberated Agent Bauer, surrendering to me the firearm of the man he had sidelined, which I employed to coerce the target to cease and desist from his apparent assault of Dr. Weiss. When he failed to desist and pulled his own weapon on her, I wounded him twice. I felt the additional bullet was required due to the previously demonstrated severity of the threat.

"With our company now at large, I offered Dr. Weiss the choice to decide the target's fate, largely to see her reaction - to judge the threat matrix based on the experience of one who had been there. She tried but failed to shoot him, telling me that this was a threat that if not properly disincentivized would become persistent and dangerous, especially given the previous briefing I had received on the target. I asked her to leave the room; I am not aware of whether or not she complied.

"I considered my options, but I was prevented from doing so because the target made a motion toward his weapon. Given the high threat status I had evaluated and the immediate necessity of self-defense, I fired a fatal shot into the target's center mass and disincentivized him. We subsequently escaped the target facility, made contact with my home team from the CIA safe house, and returned to Los Angeles."

Bristow and Dixon both nodded. "And you felt there was absolutely no possible way to capture and detain the target?" Bristow asked.

Kendall asked at the same time, "Dr. Weiss failed to shoot him?"

Brittany held up a finger, indicating she'd get to the questions in the order they were asked of her.

"No, sir, I did not. Given his history of violence towards the Agency and my agents, I felt that keeping him alive would without a doubt incur further jeopardy. While I understood his value as an intelligence asset, my certainty that this information would be bought with the price of more harm outweighed that consideration. Had I thought differently, I still would not have been able to make that choice, given that he was reaching for a firearm."

She paused, then turned her attention to Kendall.

"Yes, sir, that's correct. I asked her what she wanted me to do, she asked me to surrender the weapon, and I did. She then subsequently handed it back to me. It's not uncommon for those who have been through substantial trauma to be incapable of making a clear decision when faced with the source of that trauma, as you well know. I offered her that decision largely to gain the depth of that injury, and I did not expect her to be able to disincentivize the target."

"Suppose she had shot the target?" Kendall asked. "And her reluctance also fits another theory... that she was working with him. Why were you and Agent Bauer knocked out and she was not?"

"If she had disincentivized the target, we would have had the same end result and I would have taken responsibility for my actions then as I am now. Given her state of trauma and what I knew of her moral grounds, I found her incapable of carrying that action through and I was correct in that deduction.

"As far as your second question, sir, I am not qualified to answer, but if you would like my opinion, it hinged solely on the target's obsessive relationship with Dr. Weiss - she was kept conscious merely for his own benefit."

There was a long pause before Dixon spoke. "As far as I'm concerned, this matter was handled appropriately and we now have one less problem to deal with. Sark's activities, both his business and personal ones have seriously taxed the resources of our office. I suggest that we dismiss the inquiry. It's not necessary." He looked at Brittany. "We've got your reports and we've conducted what I consider to be the necessary interview. Eric and Arica are friends. Thank you for what you've done." He paused, waiting for Jack and Kendall's responses.

Brittany was privately surprised, given all the animosity that had led up to this moment. However, she knew when to be grateful, and was also privately relieved that she could call off McNorris, her own personal hellhound, before too much blood ended up in the water.

She simply nodded respectfully. On one hand it shouldn't have surprised her - Jack Bristow, along with Alberta Green (who'd hated her, enough to try and undermine her career later, once she'd become a threat), had put that first letter of commendation in her file.

"Thank you, sir. I appreciate your confidence regarding and respect of myself and my unit. Is there anything else I can assist with?"

"I would like you to remain here for now," Kendall said. "I don't find this matter to be settled."

Brittany didn't say anything, simply remained where she was. She had a respect for protocol, even if she had to go against it at times.

"What would you like me to clarify, sir?"

"It was my call, sir." She swallowed. "I reviewed the situation with Agent Bauer and Agent Matthew DeVincentis, who was - is - Agent Holden's partner. Agent DeVincentis disagreed with me, but I..."

She paused, collected herself. How scared had she been thinking that Mark was dead or now, tortured because she had asked him to do something? She was responsible for these men. That was part of her job, and furthermore, of who she was.

"I couldn't leave him there. I knew that if the situation had been reversed, Agent Holden would've come back for me in a heartbeat. I owed him for all he had done for me. I volunteered myself and left the rest of the choice up to Agent Bauer and Dr. Weiss. Agent Bauer only went because he didn't want me to go alone - I can't speak for Dr. Weiss.

"I had extensive plans in place to supplement our losses in the line, sir. I double- and triple-checked that the minimum of harm would come to the Agency in our absence. But what it came down to is that a man who saved my life once was out there being tortured, and I couldn't leave him there."

Dixon spoke. "Sir, what we wanted done is done. Sark is no longer a threat and we have the information we need from this."

"We don't have a location."

"Which he wasn't going to give us anyway."

At the quizzical look in Brittany's eyes, Kendall continued. "I'm surprised Agent Weiss didn't give you that case information as well since he seems to be willing to share with anyone. That reminds me, I want him suspended for the time being until I consider this resolved."

"He requested a transfer to CTU," Dixon replied.

"Then it's denied."

Dixon hid his smile. "I already granted it and had the paperwork on our side processed. I know Eric. He did what he did with good reason and he'll be more than happy to meet with you or anyone else as needed."

Kendall narrowed his eyes, then turned to address Brittany. "Fine, this session is done. I have to meet with Dr. Weiss and then I have to get on the plane back to Langley. But if I require more information, I expect you to report here as needed."

"I understand, sir. You know where to find me." Brittany nodded obediently and left the room.

As soon as she did, she phoned the D.A.'s office. "It's okay. Yeah, at least for now."
