Dec. 1st, 2004 @ 10:46 am The Lab
Arica struggled back to consciousness after the roaring eruption had thrown her across the room into the opposite wall. She could feel the heat that the explosion had left on her face and due to both the smoke and the damage done to her face and eyes during the blast, she could barely see. Not to mention the fact that the building was now on fire.

She crawled across the floor to where her assistant lay on the ground, clearly dead. She had obviously absorbed most of the blast, otherwise Arica would be dead. Arica looked up. She could already hear the sirens in the distance.

Still unable to walk, she forced her way out into the hallway, where she could hear the screams and confusion of her people. Yes, every case in the lab had been contaminated and the evidence lost or now unusable. In fact, it was probably due to one of those many cases that this had happened. They got threats all the time. If they had just listened to her and granted her proposal to upgrade security from nonexistant to fairly decent... No, now wasn't the time for those thoughts. And some of the classified cases were volatile, at best. The lab they'd rebuild and worry about later. Right now, all that was on Arica's mind was her staff and the students that would have been on their way to the forensics class she taught here. How many people had she lost? And these people, unlike CTU weren't trained for this kind of thing... nor had most other than her experienced any kind of attack or assault. She'd faced enough to be able to keep her cool during this.

"Everybody get out now," she yelled. "Don't worry about anything but each other. The Lab can and will wait." Finally able to stand, she moved beside a body laying in the hall... still breathing. Thank God. It was one of her students. She helped her up and started moving her out of the building.

[Bring in Frank and all at this point if you want... figure they'll get there before Brittany, Mike, or Eric makes it there...]

(and this is terrorist related... if you don't mind me drawing on some real events... Forensic anthros are in demand right now).

Detective Frank Smith was nervous. His partner, Sergeant Joe Friday, could tell from a mile away. He knew that Frank was thinking about the last series of explosions in L.A., which, while motivated by revenge against a specific person, had almost cost him the life of his then-girlfriend. With whom, although he'd never admit it, he was still in love.

"Is she coming?" Friday asked, just to take the edge off. Frank nodded. "She's on her way."

They swung into a parking space near the tentative LAPD command center some distance back from the scene. Frank stood there for a moment, taking it all in as fire department personnel swarmed the scene, before he shook it off and headed inside to get the brief from the scene commander. Having Brittany there would make him more comfortable, but he also felt like they would honestly need her. And he had to face it, you didn't call CTU out for anything you could handle yourself.

Arica saw the detectives as she exited the building. She'd managed to get a couple of her students out before the fire department took over and now refused to let her back in the building. She approached them. "I'm Dr. Arica Weiss. I run the lab," she knew from experience that they'd want to talk to her. Her injuries weren't serious enough that she'd need immediate medical attention. They could wait.

"Ma'am, you're not supposed to be in here," one of the officers informed her, "You should be being checked out by a paramedic immediately."

Frank stood looking out the command post window, chin on his knuckles, listening to the scene commander brief them on what little they knew. When the briefing was through, he sighed and ran a hand through his hair. His job was about the bodies that had already fallen. Yet standing on the sidelines was frustrating. It always had been.

"What do you want to do?" he asked his partner. Friday sighed. "We just try to help them any way we can. It's bomb squad's case until the situation's resolved." He looked over at Frank, "What do you want?" he said, "You know this is protocol."

"I know, but..." Frank checked his watch, taking a step back from the action, "I'd be a lot happier if Brittany would get here." He knew she wouldn't be standing around waiting.

"I'm fine. I need to make sure everyone else got out," Arica said, keeping her tone calm. She knew that someone from CTU would likely get called out to investigate this, given what had been in the lab.

"The situation is under control. Ma'am, we can't have you in here right now."

"You gonna be okay without me?" Frank asked Joe suddenly. "I'm gonna wait till she gets here..." Joe nodded, knowing Frank wasn't any good to him at the moment. "Go," he says, "I'll be fine. I'll get you if anything major happens."

Frank nodded more to himself and headed for the door, pushing out and through.

Arica nodded, knowing what they needed to do and moved outside. They'd need to talk to her soon enough. She should at least go make sure everyone else was okay. Getting herself checked out wasn't a bad idea either. She should call Eric too, so he would know she was alright. She reached for the cell phone that was usually at her hip, but it had been destroyed in the blast. Surely someone had a cell phone she could use that was working.

"Dr. Weiss," a group of her students called her over.

She moved over to them. "Are you alright?"

They nodded. "We were just going in when it happened," one said. "Do the police know what happened?"

"They're working on it," Arica said. "They'll get this sorted out. I'm glad you guys weren't in there." She kept her tone as light as possible, but she could plainly see how badly they'd been hurt. The building was a mess, her staff were scattered over the parking lot. Some had been transported to the hospital. Some were getting help now. Some were sitting, stunned.

Frank surveyed the scene again, contemplating calling Brittany's cell phone to see where she was, but he knew she couldn't be long. She had always been efficient. Sighing, he took a long look at the assembled group of people. They were all in shock and he couldn't blame them.

"Brittany will fix this," he said out loud, trying to get his thoughts in order. "She'll know exactly what to do."

"Brittany Colefield?" Arica asked, having heard the detective say the name. "She's on her way?"

Frank was momentarily startled, turning around. It made sense that she was starting to become a name player, but still it surprised him sometimes.

"Agent Colefield's on her way," he confirmed. "I take it you two know each other?" he asked, naturally, his brain thinking an ulterior thought: Maybe I was a little too quick to rule out a Parker Center relapse...don't let it be her. Not her.

Arica nodded. "Well she saved my life last week first of all. She and my husband, Eric Weiss, are old friends too. Eric actually just transferred to CTU. I take it you know her as well," Arica said, offering a weak smile. "I'm Arica. I run the lab here."

"Detective Frank Smith. I'm Brittany's...," he catches himself, knowing he's had a year and he can't quite get over that verbal hangup, "ex-boyfriend."

[The original series finale, "Beauty On The Fire, Parts One and Two" (3.04/3.05) had a series of bombings taking place in L.A. One of which involved Frank, Brittany and all the RHD cops trapped in Parker Center (LAPD HQ) with a bomb. It was soon discovered this was a revenge plot on the part of Michael Colefield's ex-partner Jack Beresford against Michael and Brittany.]

"Yeah I think I heard her mention you before..." Arica thought she remembered hearing the name. "This is a mess..." she added, referring to the current situation. A wave of dizziness suddenly rushed over her and she put her hand to her forehead, closed her eyes and took a deep breath, willing it to pass. "People are dead." She paused. "But you're right, Brittany will fix it. My people may work forensics... but this is a situation we they haven't prepared to deal with... or heck, even considered." Arica refrained from speaking on the cases they'd received recently. She could go over that with the CTU personnel...

Frank nodded. "It's a situation most of us didn't consider until the epidemic last year." He sighed, thinking back through the whole affair, being stuck in that building with everyone. "It was definitely tough. I remember it 'cause we broke up soon after."

Arica nodded. "I'll be back in a few minutes. I need to go check on my people."

She returned a few minutes later, after walking through and making sure everyone was getting the help they needed.

In fact, she returned just in time to see Brittany's car pull up.

"What've we got?" Brittany asked, the default question as she stepped out of the Mazda, hugging Frank quickly as she always seemed to do when the two hooked up. Frank swallowed and nodded toward the wreckage. The CTU agent stared, "You were not kidding, Frank."

"I don't joke about this. Well, only in certain situations." Frank nodded. "Once we get the all-clear from the fire team and the bomb squad, it's ours."

"Ours being yours and Joe's?"

"Yeah."

"So I guess asking if there's anything to talk about is out of the question." Brittany sighed, squeezing his shoulder reassuringly. "You did the right thing calling us in, Frank."

Arica could see the fear in Eric's eyes as he got out of the car and the instant relief when he saw her. He came over and hugged her, kissing her forehead gently. "Thank God you're okay."

"Yeah I'm fine. A lot of my people aren't though."

"You want me to call in Brian?" Brittany asked.

"I'm not blaming you guys. This just shouldn't have happened at all."

"What about Heather?" Eric asked refering to Arica's assistant.

"She's dead," Arica replied flatly. "And if she hadn't been standing in front of it, I would be too."

Michael nodded. "We can get a CTU medical team down if we have to, you know that. Not to mention all the interviews we'll have to do."

"Best if we all do them together," Brittany concurred, "I'm not making people say everything twice. And I need to know now whether or not this is connected to Parker Center. Today."

"My people may not deal with stuff of this magnitude, but they know the drill. They'll cooperate." She paused. "I doubt this is connected to anything of yours. We were handling a couple high profile cases and a couple classified ones... There are plenty of pissed off people who are gonna benefit from this mess."

"You're probably right, but the connection is too important to throw out without a thorough investigation. I'm going to need you to provide a full list of cases you were handling to my people and to the LAPD, it goes without saying."

Arica nodded. "Of course. I can access the data on our server. We back everything up. Could I talk to you a sec?" she asked.

When they moved out of earshot from the others, Arica spoke again. "I've got a case that's pretty sensitive... moreso than most. They gave it to our lab or rather, to me. No one else at the lab was told or allowed to be involved in the process. Normally they would handle it in a government lab, but we're a bit lower profile. Only a handful of people in the government know what's going on with it and I can't give out more information on it. I do know that would endanger everyone here who's left. Eric doesn't even know I've got a case that's potentially this messy."

Arica sighed. "I want to know who did this and I'll be happy to give you whatever you want. The CIA gave me that case. You said that guy would help you with whatever you needed. Talk to him. I've probably told you more than I'm supposed to anyway. As for the other cases, I'm sure the FBI will be sending people out to see how theirs fared... so I'd expect to hear from them. I know I will. Normally we're not so busy... but for the last bit we've been inundated with some high-profile stuff."

Brittany nodded. "Okay," she finally said. After Five, after Vic, she was used to these kinds of things falling into her hands. "By 'that guy,' I assume you mean Assistant Director Durant?"

"I don't know what you've heard, but I don't find him. He finds me. I'll do my best, but Durant does his own thing, with or without me. The biggest gun I have on my side is the L.A. County Deputy District Attorney." Brittany sighed. "We'll do what we can. It's our job, after all. You all right?"
